This has always been one of my favourite places, but the standard seems to have dropped recently. I feel it may be due to the way the food is being handled. The salmon had a noticeable smell, and the rice was quite hard, which affected the overall meal. I still like the place, but I hope the quality improves and returns to its previous standard.

Enjoyed the variety of Japanese bowls available here. The signature Gobo Rice was a nice change from the usual Japanese rice, and I also liked that the onsen egg was packed separately so it stayed intact until it was time to eat. Simple, satisfying, and convenient for a quick meal.

Right off the bat, I'm a big fan of Yakkiniku, hearing that a staple of my family, Wok Hei had spun off into this, i just had to try. What's Niku Iku? Think Wok Hey but tuned with a decidedly Japanese grilled flavour. So i got their Beef Yakiniku with Gobo Rice (basically rice in a BBQ sauce) while the rest of my family had the Unagi with either Gobo or Furikake Rice. Now if your benchmark is either the incredibly disappointing Yoshinoya or the marginally less unappetising Sukiya, Niku Iku will blow your taste buds at the price. For about half the price of Aburi-En but with the grilled charred flavour profile around 80% (hint: you need to tell Aburi to really burn the meat) im sold. The beef might have been a tad dry, and only warm when it reached but damn for $12 bucks I cant think of anything better. In terms of smoky goodness and taste. Next round I'm doubling the meat and rice.

I’ve liked what I ate from Niku Iku except this time, when I chose the low carb version, which means “crunchy cabbage” instead of rice. I was shocked when I opened the box to find this miserable portion. The cabbage was just a thin layer at the bottom. I was expecting if the cabbage is to replace rice, then it would be a thick layer. I hope they revise this.
