It’s pretty common to enjoy a meal in Singapore. It’s rare to have one and think, this needs to exist here. Chef Emil, I hope I got his name right, shared that the entire menu is purely Boyanese and Javanese. No fancy fusion. For someone who already loves Indonesian and Melayu food, this felt unexpectedly fresh. Familiar flavours, but told in a dialect I don’t come across often (or ever?) in Singapore. The pecel nyiur arrived like comfort wrapped in coconut. Creamy, nutty, gently spiced. I imagine in tastes like genuine kampung food. We also had the pari, which was just as memorable. There is something powerful about young folks bringing businesses like this to life. For me, this felt like one tangible way to get a little closer to my Javanese roots, and I’m already plotting my return with more friends 🤍
